Stay Alive Motto: “I will live a long, loving life”

The Stay Alive motto is recited enthusiastically by the teacher and students at the beginning and end of each lesson.

Stay Alive Program Components

The program involves teachers, parents/guardians and students utilizing three integrated approaches:

THE TEACHER’S GUIDE contains a series of lessons and HIV/AIDS transmission information, facilitating teacher discussions and presentation of program concepts in the classroom. The Teacher’s Guide also includes suggested songs, skits and activities that are used to reinforce the concepts and skills taught in the Stay Alive lessons.

THE PARENT/GUARDIAN DISCUSSION GUIDE facilitates in-depth discussions on sensitive topics at home. By involving parents and guardians, Stay Alive also promotes family building and family strengthening.

THE STUDENT PLEDGE CARD is utilized by students to record pledges that help them incorporate lesson principles into their lives.

Stay Alive Program Modules

Stay Alive I (9-10 years old)

Lessons teach consequential thinking skills and the power personal choice can have in HIV/AIDS prevention. Children learn that happiness can be found in loving, healthy families.

Stay Alive II (10-11 years old)

Lessons build on the theme of, “As a person of great worth, I deserve to live.” These lessons also focus upon the value of each child, the contributions he or she can make to others, and the importance of preserving each individual life.

Stay Alive III (11-12 years old)

Lessons teach responsible decision-making skills and the acceptance of personal responsibility. The theme, “I can make responsible decisions and accept responsibility for what I do” is related to HIV/AIDS prevention.

Stay Alive IV (12-13 years old)

Lessons teach living with integrity. Children and youth discuss the theme, “As a person of integrity, I make responsible decisions and choose what I know is right, despite the negative influences around me.” In this module, students explore the role integrity plays in their lives and how living with integrity helps them remain HIV/AIDS disease-free.

Stay Alive V (13-14 years old)

Lessons explore emotionally healthy relationships: what they are and how to develop and maintain them. The concepts of abstinence, fidelity and genuinely caring for others are discussed within the context of HIV/AIDS prevention. By applying the skills and concepts taught within the Stay Alive program, youth are now empowered to “Live Long, Loving Lives.”

The Four P's of a Successful Lesson

Picture

Each lesson utilizes a picture depicting a key principle. The picture is used to stimulate discussion on lesson concepts.

Principles and Participation

The lessons are designed to encourage student participation. Teachers ask questions that help students think about the concepts being presented. The success of the lesson is determined by the amount of participation by the students in the lesson discussions.

Practice

Students practice the skills learned in the lesson by using the Skill Building Activities. It is very important to practice the skills and concepts in order to change behavior. Parents are encouraged to continue the Skill Building Activities at home. This increases the sustainability of the program.

Pledge

Students repeat the motto at the end of every lesson then write a pledge related to the concept taught in the lesson. This helps students see how the lesson can be applied in their lives.
