Stay Alive in Ghana
The Stay Alive program was first pilot tested in Ghana in July 2003. The official launching of the Stay Alive program took place in April 2004 in Asesewa in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The guest of honor was the Hon. Christine Churcher, Minister of State responsible for Basic, Secondary and Girl Child Education. The chairman for the occasion was Dr. Warren Naamara, Country Coordinator for UNAIDS. Government officials from Accra, Yilo and Manya Krovo districts also attended. By the end of 2004, the Stay Alive program had reached 20,861 students in Ghana.
Reach The Children has been ramping up Stay Alive activities in Ghana since 2005. Martin Obeng
who is native to Ghana and has a professional background in education is the
Stay Alive Country Director. Mr. Obeng reports that Coca Cola Africa is funding
the Stay Alive I program in the Cape Coast, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirim District.
Teacher training began there in November 2005. Instruction in Stay Alive I began
at the end of 2005 in Ga Mashie in Accra. Schools in the Greater Accra District
began teaching Stay Alive in early 2006.
