What others are saying about the Stay Alive program
“The Stay Alive programme is such a helpful programme to our pupils
both in school and out of it. It has helped our pupils to learn the life
skills. And they now own their life! And as such they have the guts to
say no to men. It has reduced the number of pregnancies in school and
early marriages.”
-- Justine Kawunde, a teacher from Buikwe Church
of Uganda Primary School, Mukono District
“Society is trying to change us from the outside in; Stay Alive
changes you from the inside out.”
-- Lilian Odiero, Kenya
“The program is very vital at my school. Before the program, we
had many problems with children running out of school and had pregnancies.
We no longer have these problems. Children now share ideas and knowledge
simply because parents, teachers and children are working together.”
-- A teacher from Ndeta-kwa Watoto School, Nairobi
“What we are giving the children is much more important than money;
it is about life.”
-- Joshua Ojwang, KEWIRA—Kenya Women Participating
In Rural Action, Kenya
“Many kids are not in school. Stay Alive has helped many to go
back to school. Now we are shining because we have knowledge. Everyone
is following a different route and we thank God that we can have this
program at this time.”
-- Lydiah Anyango & Debrah Awino, students
from the Kwa Watoto Centre, Kenya
"The Stay Alive program can help the next generation to be HIV/AIDS
disease free."
-- Community leader in Nairobi, Kenya
"On behalf of the Government of Swaziland, I wish to request the
Stay Alive Program for Swaziland. I believe that the Program would be
beneficial in the overall efforts of the Government of Swaziland to reduce
the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country, particularly to the younger
people"
-- Clifford S. Mambe, Ambassador and Permanent
Representative to the United Nations
" We would like to see Stay Alive expanded throughout Kenya."
-- Professor Karega Mutahi, Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Kenya
"This program has helped us feel closer and communicate better
with the orphan we are caring for."
-- An orphan guardian in Kitale, Kenya
"It is the right time for this program. We can see a light at the
end of the tunnel."
-- A District Education Officer in Makindu, Kenya
"If we had had this program 10 years ago, we wouldn't be having
the problems we are today."
-- A parent in Kendu Bay, Kenya
"It has been noted that this change is not only affecting a child
but it’s also changing parents."
-- Uganda Report 2005
“I was pleased to learn of the many children in Kenya between
the ages 9 and 14 who have benefited from the Stay Alive programme currently
being taught in several of our public and private schools. We believe
that this abstinence-based programme, which teaches our children consequential
decision making skills and enhances better communication with parents/guardians,
is fostering positive behavioural changes and is preparing the next generation
to remain HIV/AIDS free. Stay Alive is an essential element of our total
HIV/AIDS effort. We would like to see Stay Alive expanded throughout Kenya.”
-- Dr. Keneth L. Chebet, Director, NASCOP/NLTP,
Ministry of Health, AIDS/TB/LEPROSY DIVISION, Kenya
“The program is a great help here in our area. It educates parents
and the community as a whole on the danger of HIV/AIDS. Stay Alive gave
the parents a way of communicating with their children, making the children
more free with them. We thank you.”
-- Charles Mutungwa, A Parent in Kenya
“Because of the program we have learned to sympathize with and
not fear those suffering from AIDS. I thank you because my children and
I are firmly united because of the Stay Alive program”
-- Gideon Mutie, A Parent in Kenya
“The Stay Alive Program has really responded well to the children.
It has enlightened their lives. I know this by the way they were reasoning
before the lessons and the way they are reasoning now. As a parent, it
has given me a good reflection of my character. I now have a different
understanding of the HIV/AIDS disease. The trainers tell me to be a good
example, and Stay Alive has helped build the child as well as me as the
parent.”
-- Nduku Wambua, a Parent in Kenya
“Your organization’s [Reach the Children, the implementing
organization in Ghana] efforts would be complementary and fully in line
with the UNAIDS thinking and indeed in support of the HIV/AIDS national
strategic framework.”
-- DR. Warren Naamara, Country Coordinator UNAIDS,
Ghana
"The children just love the Stay Alive program. I love the program.
The children ask for the lessons all of the time. They love them. They
want them."
-- Phoebe Muthama, Principal, Shining Star School,
Nairobi, Kenya
“They now have the strength to say no, which they did not have
before. They feel like their life is in their hands.”
-- A teacher from Uganda
